How To Avoid The Dreaded Halitosis

What is Halitosis?

Halitosis is the technical term for chronic bad breath. In most cases, halitosis is as a result of poor dental health care as the decay of food particles and debris in the mouth produces a sulfur compound that causes the awful smell.

What causes Halitosis

Poor dental and oral habits can result in halitosis. Moreover, bad breath can be worsened by the types of foods we consume or an unhealthy lifestyle habit such as smoking, etc. In some cases, though, halitosis can be a sign of other health problems such as:-

  • Yeast infections of the mouth
  • Dry mouth (referred to as xerostomia)
  • Pneumonia
  • Bronchitis
  • Chronic sinus infections
  • Postnasal drip
  • Diabetes
  • Chronic acid reflux
  • Liver and/or Kidney problems.

How can you Prevent Halitosis?

Halitosis can be reduced or prevented if the below recommendations are followed:

  1. Exercise good oral hygiene by brushing teeth and tongue after each meal. You should also dental floss so as to remove any lingering food particles and plaque lodged between the teeth. Toothbrushes should be replaced every 2-3 months or after suffering from any illness. In the case of persons who wear dentures, these should be removed every night and thoroughly cleaned.
  2. Visit dentist at least every 6 months so that an oral exam and professional teeth cleaning can be conducted. Through the oral exam, your dentist will be able to detect any diseases and/or disorders responsible for causing bad breath.
  3. Deter from engaging in unhealthy lifestyle habits such as smoking or chewing on tobacco based products.
  4. Drink lots of water. Water helps to keep the mouth moist and encourages the production of saliva which helps to wash away food particles and bacteria.
