Aesthetic Dental of Barbados
Gum contouring which is also referred to as gum reshaping or tissue sculpting is a cosmetic dental procedure that is used to even out an uneven gum line. Such a procedure is ideal for persons whose gums rest too high or too low on their gums and is therefore impacting on the aesthetics of a beautiful smile.
What Causes Uneven Gums
There are a variety of causes of uneven gums. Such causes include but are not limited to:-
- Certain health problems and/or conditions: - In cases when gums appear too high and give the appearance of long teeth, a condition referred to as gum recession tends to be responsible. This condition causes gum tissue to pull back from teeth which exposes the root of the teeth and can further lead to tooth decay and tooth loss. Gum recession could also be a sign of a more serious underlying health condition known as periodontal disease which causes the deterioration of the supporting structures of the teeth.
- Taking of particular prescription drugs.
When is Gum Contouring Necessary
Gum contouring by itself is regarded as a cosmetic procedure as it is most often not medically necessary. In certain circumstances, though, gum contouring might be necessary as it might be part of other periodontal procedures such as crown lengthening, pocket reduction, etc.
How Much Does it Cost
The cost of gum contouring is all dependent on the magnitude of work that is needed. Through a consultation, we at Aesthetic Dental will determine what work is needed and what payment plans are available so as to give you that beautiful smile you so desire.
